A Century of South African Mining
Anglo American is one of the world’s largest diversified mining groups, with a South African heritage stretching back to 1917. From those beginnings on the Witwatersrand, the company has grown into a global resources business, yet its South African operations remain central to its identity, spanning iron ore, platinum group metals, diamonds and coal across the country.
The group’s iron ore business, run through its majority-owned Kumba Iron Ore subsidiary, ships high-grade product from the Northern Cape to steelmakers around the world, while its platinum group metals operations on the Bushveld Complex supply metals critical to the global automotive and clean energy industries. Together with its diamond interests and coal assets, these businesses make Anglo American one of the most diversified mining employers in South Africa.
“South Africa is where Anglo American began, and it remains a cornerstone of our global business today,” says an Anglo American spokesperson. “Our commitment here goes beyond extraction – it is about sustaining jobs, communities and export earnings for generations to come.”
Modernising for the Future
In recent years, Anglo American has invested heavily in modernising its South African operations, deploying automation, remote monitoring and data-driven safety systems across its mines. These investments are aimed at improving safety outcomes for the tens of thousands of employees and contractors who work across its operations, while extending the productive life of ageing shafts and pits.
The company has also prioritised transformation and local supplier development, working with historically disadvantaged businesses and investing in the communities surrounding its operations through housing, education and enterprise development programmes.
A Driving Force Behind Exports
Anglo American’s South African operations remain one of the country’s largest single contributors to mineral export earnings, with iron ore, platinum group metals and diamonds shipped to markets across Asia, Europe and the Americas. As global demand shifts toward the metals needed for electrification and renewable energy, the company’s South African portfolio is positioned to remain a vital part of both the national economy and the global supply chain for decades to come.
