Defy Appliances has been manufacturing household appliances in South Africa since 1905, making it one of the country’s oldest and most recognisable industrial names. Operating major production facilities in KwaZulu-Natal, Defy produces stoves, refrigerators and washing machines for both the domestic market and export customers across the region.
Defy’s Ezakheni and Jacobs plants form the backbone of its South African manufacturing operation, supporting thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the appliance supply chain. From steel pressing and enamelling to final assembly, much of the manufacturing process for Defy’s core range takes place locally, reinforcing the company’s reputation as a genuine South African industrial manufacturer rather than simply an importer or assembler.
“Local manufacturing is at the core of who we are,” says a company spokesperson. “We’ve been building appliances for South African homes for well over a century, and that heritage of hands-on manufacturing continues to shape everything we do today.”
Part of a Global Manufacturing Network
Since being acquired by Chinese appliance group Hisense in 2021, Defy has gained access to significant international investment, engineering expertise and global supply chains, while retaining its South African manufacturing footprint. This has allowed the company to modernise production lines and broaden its appliance range while continuing to build products at home.
The tie-up with a major global manufacturer has also opened the door to greater export potential, with Defy positioned to supply appliances manufactured in South Africa to markets elsewhere on the continent.
Innovation and Local Content
Defy continues to invest in energy-efficient technology and updated designs across its stove, refrigeration and laundry ranges, while working with local component suppliers to maintain strong local content levels in its manufacturing – an important contribution to South Africa’s broader industrial and localisation strategy.
