Richards Bay-based Bell Equipment is one of South Africa’s proudest manufacturing success stories, designing and building earthmoving and materials-handling machinery that is exported to more than 80 countries. Founded as a small family engineering workshop, Bell has grown into a globally respected manufacturer with a footprint spanning Africa, Europe and North America.
The company’s roots trace back to 1954, when Irvine Bell began repairing and modifying agricultural and forestry equipment on the family’s sugar cane farm in KwaZulu-Natal. That practical, problem-solving spirit remains at the heart of the business today, where Bell continues to design and manufacture articulated dump trucks (ADTs), motor graders, backhoe loaders and a wide range of other heavy machinery used in mining, construction, forestry and agriculture.
“We are one of very few truly South African-owned original equipment manufacturers competing on a global stage,” says a company spokesperson. “Everything from concept design to final assembly happens right here in Richards Bay, and that local expertise is something our customers around the world have come to rely on.”
A Global Manufacturing Footprint
Bell Equipment’s flagship Richards Bay facility remains the engineering and manufacturing heart of the group, employing thousands of skilled workers and supporting an extensive local supplier network. The plant has become renowned for its production of the Bell Articulated Dump Truck, a machine the company pioneered and which remains one of its best-known products internationally.
Beyond South Africa, Bell has established assembly and manufacturing operations in Germany and China, allowing it to serve international markets more efficiently while still anchoring its core engineering and product development capability in South Africa. This global footprint has helped the company weather local economic pressures by diversifying its revenue base across mining and construction cycles worldwide.

Bell has consistently invested in research and development to keep its machines competitive against much larger multinational rivals. The company’s articulated dump trucks are particularly prized in the mining and construction sectors for their reliability in harsh African terrain and conditions, and Bell has continued to refine engine efficiency, operator comfort and telematics monitoring across its product range.
