Is German nuclear tail-off plan a shining example?
TABJ - May 31 - The British press has been teaming with stories about Germany’s bold and brash exit from nuclear power generation today, as commentators say the country runs the risk of becoming comparatively left behind by continuing its reliance on the energy sector—citing the government’s plans going forward which embrace nuclear power as part of its move towards cleaner energy usage.
Germany will close all 17 of its nuclear facilities by 2022, a move which has already been highlighted as looking positive for the wider renewable energy bracket, and plans to replace approximately 20 per cent of its energy needs with clean energy facilities only serve to strengthen opinion in that regard.
There are, of course, also concerns for how this move might impact on the German economy, should it be forced to import nuclear power from elsewhere, for example. Some sceptics are already speaking out, saying that it is changes in policy, not specific technology, that can bolster the nation’s renewable portion.
