Riots in Maputo come to a halt

TABJ Sep 3 - An air of calm reigns over Maputo, Mozambique as two days of rioting because of price increases in bread comes to a halt.

The aftermath of the riots leave seven people dead and 288 injured.

"This was the worst rioting I have ever seen in my life, people can really turn very violent and lives are at risk, instead of a peaceful demonstration," Maputo resident Felizmina Fabia said to Reuters.

Many are blaming the Mozambique government for the hike in bread prices, water and electricity tariffs.

Alice Mabota, head of the Mozambican League of Human Rights, told Portugal's Lusa news agency “The government underestimated the situation and can't understand or doesn't want to understand that this is a protest against the higher cost of living.”

There is an estimated 122 million meticals (2.1 pounds) of damage to Mozambique.

Antonio Fernandes, Mozambique’s Trade and industry Minister said to Radio Mozambique, "The losses from the events of Wednesday and Thursday are estimated at 122 million meticais and we registered seven deaths and 288 injuries."
